Embry Rucker Shelter Without Power

Derecho knocks out electricity at Reston Interfaith's shelter, but facility is faring well.

Reston Interfaith's has been without power since Friday's storm, but CEO Kerrie Wilson says most residents are staying with family or friends for now.

"Staff have worked with residents who have options to stay temporarily with family or friends," she said.  "I could see that residents who are still there are in good spirits and working well with staff.  While there is no generator, the stove is gas so meals can be cooked and staff have worked with donors to bring in what they need for each meal."

Fairfax County and are opening up the nearby hypothermia shelter space tonight at 9 p.m. Sunday. Reston Interfaith has identified people for that space, Wilson said.

The shelter front desk phones are not working, so RI can’t respond to public inquiries.  However, the resident phone is working and so residents and their family and friends have that number to stay in touch.

Because of the power outage, the shelter cannot handle food donations  other than those already organized for each meal.  Water, juice and ice in coolers are welcome, though.
