Your Chance to Be Amyazing!

Amazing, or should I say Amyazing things happen when kids (and their supportive parents) work together.

To honor the memory of their friend, Amy Boyle, who died from a brain tumor in 2008, her  peers joined forces to raise money and awareness to fight childhood brain cancer.  The group became a sanctioned school club when they moved on to middle school, and when the members entered last fall, they brought Amy’s Amigos with them.  Now it is an official club at South Lakes; and they continue to raise money and encourage a love and enjoyment of life and fitness. 

I’ve had the pleasure of watching these kids I’ve known since they were preschoolers band together in an ongoing community service effort, which has grown along with them.  From selling lollipops after school, they have progressed to the point where they are putting on a community engaging sporting event.

This weekend, Amy’s Amigos is putting on the Reston Youth Triathlon; a mini-triathlon with swimming, biking and running components, with lengths determined by the athlete’s age. 

To ensure the safety of all participants, a large number of volunteers are needed.  There are jobs for everyone from children who can cheer on participants, to adults who can help with bike distribution and supervision along course routes.
