"We expect classmates from 1938  to 1972," M. Ann Jenkins, one of the organizers, told Patch. "We add another class [to the event] each year."

Jenkins said, the event is a large and lauded one, and former students from across the country regularly make the trip to Herndon to attend.

"[This year], classmates will be traveling from Alaska, New Mexico, Texas [and more] to attend our weekend celebration," she said.

A roving professional photographer will be on hand to help commemorate the occasion, and various classes will be invited to take class photos throughout the event.

To mark the occasion, as they do each year, the alumni association is also granting two scholarships of $1,250 to deserving Herndon High seniors, who are selected by the school's guidance department.

"The scholarships and picnic are made possible by donations received from Herndon High School Alumni from across the country," Jenkins explained.

Special smaller events will also take place over the weekend, Jenkins said. Members of the class of 1953 are celebrating their 60th reunion with a dinner on Saturday evening, and members of the class of 1963 are celebrating their 50th reunion with a dinner at the Worldgate Marriott.

The reunion picnic will take place from 12-5 p.m. at Algonkian Regional Park, 47001 Fairway Dr. in Sterling, at shelter number one.
