Stay Trim Tip #2: Exercise Consistently!

This is the second piece to a 5 part series on my favorite and most successful tips for staying trim and fit.  If you missed the first Stay Trim Tip, make sure to visit our blog on the patch to catch up on prior articles.

The #2 tip in the Stay Trim series is to Exercise Consistently!

Now what exactly is the definition of exercising consistently you ask? Well, I will give you my version of what it means to me.  Exercising consistently means commit and exercise 5 days a week for 30-60 minutes.  Put it at the top of your list.  Get it done first thing in the morning so that nothing else creeps up into your schedule to make you blow it off.

If you get this one thing right and commit to a 5 day a week regimen of workouts you will get fat off the right way and stay healthy and fit for life.  It’s the inconsistent exercise routines (just like the yo yo diets) that fail to deliver results.  Not only that, but it’s terribly stressful on your body.  Working out intensely, losing a bunch of weight and then just dropping it cold turkey is just as stressful on your body as going on and off fad diets.  The body craves consistency.  It wants to know you are for real, so give it just that and the results will astound you!

Here’s a little analogy I like to tell my clients.  I liken exercising consistently to saving money in a savings account.  Each month you put a little bit of your salary away.  Sure, it might not be rewarding right away and it’s even hard as heck to part with money you could be spending right now, but you do it for the long-term outcome.  You continue to make these savings deposits overtime and then one day you look at the account and you have amassed a TON of money.

Well, your body is the same way.  Each day you workout you are making an investment in your health.  Your body starts to get stronger and respond more efficiently over time.  Just like the more money you amass the quicker it grows, its sort of the same way with your body.  The more investment you make to it with consistent workouts, the more it starts responding with even less work on your part!  Your body will turn into a lean mean fat burning machine and as long as you deliver it consistent workouts it will stay on autopilot for you!  Believe it or not, it actually becomes easier to stay toned, lean strong and fit.

I can personally attest to this.  At 36 years of age I am actually in better shape and more toned than I was in my 20’s.  It’s not because my exercise routine is drastically different.  No, it’s because I have been consistent with my exercise for over 10 years now.  I can actually do less exercise than in my 20’s and my body responds rapidly.  This is because I have built a strong stable foundation of consistent exercise and my body knows I am not fooling around.

You can do this too.  Just don’t be in any rush.  Just know that each and every day you are waking up and doing the right thing for your mind and body.  Feel good NOW!  Don’t worry about next week or a year from now.  Be present to your workout and proud of yourself each day you accomplish one.

Before you know it, you will look back and be so thankful that you committed to a consistent exercise routine.  It’s like climbing rungs on a ladder.  Every little bit you do get’s you further ahead.  Remember life is a journey and it’s not about crazy diets, deprivation or exercising intensely just to get 20 lbs. off in time for your high school reunion.   I know for sure that patience and consistency will always win the race!
