Cycling Connects Neighbors

Over the last few weeks there have been several informal cycling events that have helped connect neighbors and neighborhoods in Reston.  Looking ahead, the 31st Annual Reston Century is just a few weeks away on August 25 and on Sept. 28 residents will have the opportunity to join the Reston Association (RA) Board of Directors on a ride around Lake Anne.  Cycling has truly become a great connector in Reston!

Tour de Lakes - On July 31, over 40 kids and adults participated in the 3rd Annual Tour de Lakes ride. In the spirit of Tour de France (including a cardboard replica of the Eiffel Tower!) Riders navigated the paths around Lake Audubon and Lake Thoreau in two stages.  This has proven to be a fun ride for all ages and abilities and helps connect residents from over a half dozen neighborhoods.  For the second year in a row Delegate Ken Plum served as at race marshal! The weather for Reston's first Bike to Pool Day on August 3 was less than stellar.  However, one of the primary goals of this event was simply to get residents thinking about alternative transportation to pools, tennis courts, village centers, etc.  Several neighborhoods participated in a “Tour de Pools” that navigated the paths to Lake Thoreau Pool, Lake Audubon Pool, Glade Pool and Ridge Heights Pool.  Hopefully next year there can be several of these “tours” organized . . . and better weather!

Reston Century

If you really want to get out and ride with over 1,000 cyclists in your community, then make sure you register for the the 31st running of the Reston Century on Sunday, August 25, 2013.  A “century” refers to riding your bike 100 miles . . . but don’t worry there are 33 and 66 mile courses if you are not ready for that distance.  This event always features a great celebration at Reston Town Center after the ride!  More info: www.restonbikeclub.org
