Could You Get Around Reston Without a Car?

For many Reston residents our cars connect us to our purposeful activities. Join us to learn how to better navigate the public transportation system.

Imagine that you woke up in the morning and you couldn't drive your car anymore!  How would you get to your job, your friends house, and the grocery store?  Could you easily participate in your hobbies and enjoy your preferred recreational activities?

For many Restonians, these purposeful activities are tied to our ability to drive ourselves at our own schedule.  Without a personal vehicle we are left to walking, biking, getting a ride from someone, or public transportation. Now imagine that the reason you can't drive is due to an injury or disability!

If you have never navigated the public transportation system it can be a confusing system. Fortunately we have several local resources to help us learn how to use the system and tap into its benefits.  Our next Reston for a Lifetime meeting on Wed. March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at RCC-Hunters Woods will provide us with an opportunity to learn how to navigate this system in Reston!

A special feature of this meeting will be a special Travel Training demonstration on a real bus! Some of the highlights include:

• Metro programs and services, benefits of public transportation to include budgeting and timeliness, safety and convenience

• Our Metro Bus Operator will provide his demonstration of the accessibility features of the bus, paying fare with the SmarTrip Card, customer expectations, rights and responsibilities.

• Budgeting for trips, station operation times, accessibility features, demonstrate adding fare, discuss problem solving, point out restrooms, security cameras, emergency notification system and so much more. The presentation is really quite informative, entertaining but also aims to make customers feel safe and confident.
