Wrestling: SLHS Wins Three, Improves to 18-4

Senior night for Seahawks features team victories over T.C. Williams, Wakefield and O'Connell.

South Lakes High School's wrestlers won three dual meet matches while celebrating Senior Night at on Wednesday.

South Lakes defeated T.C. Williams, Wakefield and Bishop O'Connell. The team improves to 18-4. Coach Bruce Hall and the team also celebrated the final home matches for seniors Kevin Argueta, Matt Kelly, Tommy Rugari, Chris Maginniss, Tim Kim and Mike Shoebottom.

Highlights from Wednesday:

SLHS 39, Bishop O'Connell 27 - The match featured pins from Anas Fain, Chris Maginniss, Mike Shoebottom, Domity Dahn, and Alex Smurda. 

SLHS 15, Wakefield 0 - Andrew Brooker came from behind in the final 30 seconds to win 10-7.  The team also had pins by Mike Shoebottom and Alex Smurda. 

SLHS 58,  T.C. Williams 24 - Senior Kevin Argueta ended the night in the final bout with a pin of his opponent.  The hard-fought match featured several lead changes until Kevin caught his opponent in a reverse head lock and ended the match.  South Lakes also had pins from senior Matt Kelly, Chris Maginniss, and Mike Shoebottom.

The leading Seahawk wrestlers are Josh Forrest 25-2, Chris Maginniss 26-3, Alex Smurda 24-7, Mike Shoebottom 23-7 and Nick Willie 20-11. 

The Seahawks travel to Centreville on Saturday for four dual meets.  The Liberty District tournament starts Feb. 1 at McLean.

Indoor Track - The SLHS girls 4 x 400 relay qualified for the state championship with a meet-record 4:01 at the Hampton Roads Elite Team members are Grace Gillen, Delaney Wickman, Claire Nieusma, and Kyannah Calhoun. Danielle Hale also took third in the triple jump.

Highlights also came from the girls 4 x 200 (Danielle, Maya Rodriguez, Kristin Tran, Delaney) and the girls 4 x 800 (Augusta Durham, Abby Reinhold, Devin Nieusma, Kyannah) which both ran a region auto standard, and Devin (1000 m 3:09 PR), Ozioma Chinaka (300m 44. PR), Kristin (55m, 7.84 PR, Triple jump), Maya (55H, 9.40 PR, Triple jump), Abby (500m, 1:25 PR), Augusta (500m), and Daniel Johnsen (300m) who all ran district auto times.
