Wrestling: SLHS on a Roll with Six Wins

Seahawks beat six teams last week - including a rare victory over Langley.

South Lakes High School's wrestling team continued its winning streak as it won six dual matches last week - two on Wednesday and four on Saturday.

The Seahawks are 11-1 since mid-December. Last week they beat Herndon, Stuart, Washington- Lee, Fairfax, Thomas Jefferson, and for the first time in many years, Langley.  

Langley High School has been the dominant Liberty District program for more than a decade, winning the Liberty wrestling district title for the past 11 years.

The following wrestlers contributed to the winning streak:  Francis Bowen, Kevin Arguetta, Anas Fain, Terry Petersen, Daniel Strauss, Tommy Rugari, Chris Maginniss, Nick Willie, Mike Shoebottom, Josh Forrest, Colby Laxton, Ian Schweppe, and Alex Smurda.

SL 62, Fairfax 18  - Featured pins from Mike Shoebottom, Josh Forrest, Alex Smurda, and Terry Petersen.

SL 39, Washington-Lee 34 - Featured a key win from Tommy Rugari in the final match to get the team victory for South Lakes.  Also included pins by Chris Maginniss, Josh Forrest, Colby Laxton, Alex Smurda, and Anas Fain. 

SL 39, Thomas Jefferson 28 - Chris Maginniss pinned his opponent in the final match to win for the Seahawks.  Also pins by Nick Willie, Josh Forrest, Alex Smurda, and Terry Petersen 

SL 49 vs Langley 30 - A highlight of the match was Tommy Rugari's seven-overtime win.  The match also featured pins by Mike Shoebottom, Colby Laxton, Kevin Arguetta, Anas Fain, and Terry Petersen 

Tommy Rugari, Chris Maginniss, Josh Forrest, Alex Smurda won all four of their matches.  Josh Forrest improved his season record to 23-1, Chris Maginniss is 21-2 and Mike Shoebottom is 21-5.
