VHSL Proposes Moving South Lakes to Large Schools Division

Rising enrollment means realignment.

The Virginia High School League is proposing that football move from Division 5 to Division 6, the classification for the largest schools in the area.

Changes are based on enrollment. South Lakes' student enrollment has increased from fewer than 1,500 to a projected 2,250 since undergoing redistricting three years ago.

The VHSL also proposed Langley and South County drop from Division 6 to Division 5, and that Arlington's Washington-Lee also move to Region 6.

The new classification will not affect the district in which South Lakes plays, says VHSL spokesman Mike McCall. Since Fairfax County Public Schools are all AAA, the largest schools, South Lakes is not likely to change back to the Concorde District.

Meanwhile, South Lakes principal Bruce Butler said there should soon be a decision about a new football coach. Andy Hill, who coached the Seawhawks in 2010, will be leaving South Lakes at the end of the school year to coach his alma mater in Woodbury, Minn.

The Seahawks were 8-4 in 2010.
