Tuning Up For Tennis Season

Reston Association has some new additions to its tennis lineup.

Reston Association is serving up some new additions to its extensive tennis program this spring.

The ever-popular “Stroke of the Week” class (Tuesdays, 7-8:30 p.m.) is back, focusing on a different stroke each week for people who just want to work on one part of their game. Before each class (6:30 p.m.), Phifer Fitness will be holding free fitness sessions, presenting exercises to compliment the stroke.

“They are showing how important fitness is if you want to improve your game,” says Reston Association Tennis Manager Mary Conaway.

Also new this season, RA is offering Cardio Tennis  - a high-energy workout incorporating tennis drills.  Sign up in advance for four or more “Stroke of the Week” or “Cardio Tennis” classes and get 5 percent off the fee.

The schedule for regular tennis lessons has been tweaked to offer more options for people, says Conaway.

“We are offering a more varied schedule to accommodate the community this year,” says Conaway.

Several other program favorites are returning, including Drop-In Tennis on Tuesday nights, evening leagues, and a daytime Senior Round Robin program.

For kids, classes are available from Munchkin Tennis (3-4 year olds) to the advanced Junior Futures (8-12 year olds) and High School Development (12-17 year olds), with something in between for every level of young tennis players.

To further cater to the smaller set, the two tennis courts at the North Shore location will be reconfigured to create six smaller 36’x18’ courts.

“The whole country has switched to this format [for kids], and we’re very lucky that the Reston Association is ahead of this wave,” says RA tennis coordinator Rob Tucker. “This gives kids a place to play when they are not with us and gives them an opportunity to work on the game.”

Senior citizens who still enjoy playing tennis but are restricted due to less mobilty will also benefit from the smaller courts at North Shore, which are expected to be in place by summer.

All tennis activities begin April 1 at the 48 community tennis courts located throughout Reston. For regular updates and information, visit Reston Association's tennis page or the Reston Tennis Facebook page.
