Sprinting Through Reston Sunday

Athletes ready for the sixth Reston Sprint Triathlon.

More than 700 athletes will race through Reston Sunday at the sixth annual Reston Sprint Triathlon.

The event begins at 7 a.m. at with a quarter-mile swim. It then continues with a 12-mile bike race and a three-mile run through North Reston. The finish line is adjacent to the Lake Newport Pool.

The sprint triathlon is shorter than the , so it attracts a wide variety of experienced and new participants. Reston residents Tim O'Kane and Karen Berry have been writing a humorous blog for Reston Patch as they train for their first sprint triathlon.

The Reston Sprint Triathlon raised $100,000 for Reston Interfaith in 2011. Proceeds from this year's race will also be donated to Reston Interfaith.

Last year's top finishers were (men's) Henry Tragle, 35, who finished in 56:05 and (women's) Leslie Knibb, 48, who finished in 1:02.59.
