South Lakes Sports Roundup

Baseball loses, but boys soccer and girls softball start with wins.

South Lakes High School baseball opened the 2012 season Friday night with a 13-3 loss to Herndon High.  

Herndon jumped out on top in the second inning after a three-run homer by Austin Schnarrs.  After Herndon tacked on another run in the third, South Lakes battled back against senior Addison Wright with three runs in the bottom of the fith, all with two out.

 Seahwaks junior Hayden Hall started the rally with a double and senior Ryan Forrest added a key RBI single.  South Lakes senior Billy McLaughlin pitched for six strong innings.

The game was the first of four Free Admission Fridays at South Lakes where kids wearing their team jersey (Little League, Cal Ripken) or South Lakes blue and green are admitted free with a paying adult. 

The next South Lakes Free Admission Friday is March 23 against Thomas Jefferson.  Also, mark your calendar for Youth Baseball Night on April 13.  Players not only get into the game for free, but they can enjoy special activities and gifts.

The Seahawks will be migrating south during spring break to participate in the BATRUP tournament near Hilton Head April 1-5 against teams from around the region.  If you are enjoying spring break in the area, come on over to Bluffton High School to root on the Seahawks.  Check out the schedule at www.southlakesathletics.org.

Soccer: South Lakes Boys won their season opener with a 2-0 victory over TC Williams.  Both goals were headers made by seniors Mitch Dempster and Jesus Maradiaga.

The Seahawks face Lee High School Monday night at home.

Softball:  South Lakes opened its 2012 season with a 6-4 victory at West Springfield.

Freshman Tess Rayle got the start on the mound where she held the Spartans scoreless for five innings, striking out six and issuing no walks. Paige Coatney earned her first victory of the season, taking over pitching duties in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two batters and halting a West Springfield rally that left the score tied at four at the end of six innings. The Seahawks grabbed the initiative, scoring two additional runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

The Seahawk offense was highlighted by three triples delivered by Paige Coatney, Rachel Rogers and Sara Dzurilla.

The Seahawks have a busy upcoming week, playing three games in five days. They play at Woodson Monday and at McLean Tuesday. They have their first home game of the season against the TJ Colonials on Friday.  All three games begin at 6:30 p.m.
