South Lakes Boys Finish Second at Track Regionals

Seahawks advance many athletes to state meet.

The South Lakes boy's track and field team scored 91 points to finish as the runner-up to champion Annandale (94 points) at the 30-school Northern Region Championship Meet at Lake Braddock on Friday. 

Oakton was third with 52 points. 

The boys team had won three straight outdoor titles. The girls team finished ninth with 24 points, the girls' team best finish in seven years.  South County won the girls; team title .

Sean Price led the boys team with individual championships in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meter dash (personal best 10.84), and 200 meter dash.  He also finished second in the high jump with a personal best 6-4. 

Armando Drain was the runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles with a new school record, 38.72.  Drain also finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Rashaan Jones finished third in the high jump and the triple jump with a personal best, 45-0.  Jacob Grundahl finished 6th in the 800 meter run to advance to States. 

Additional scoring came from the boys 4 x 400 (Ian Angara, Jacob Grundahl, Brian Brinson, Armando Drain) finishing fourth, Ian Angara finishing 7th in the 300 meter hurdles, the boys 4 x 100 (Rashaan Jones, Brian Brinson, Connor Metcalf, Sean Price) finishing seventh.    The boys 4 x 800 finished third on Thursday.    

In girls competition, Kyannah Calhoun finished third in the 800-meter run.    She ran a personal best 2:15.52.

  The Seahawks advanced two relays for the first time in several years.   The 4 x 100 meter relay finished third with Kristin Tran, Naimah Coleman, Aya Abdelhalim, and Danielle Hale in a season best time. 

The girls 4 x 400 meter relay also finished 3rd.  The team of Grace Gillen, Emily Lopynski, Haley Vaughn, and Kyannah Calhoun also ran a season best time.   Lopynski also scored with a seventh place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and Grace placed 8th in the 400 to earn a point. 

On Thursday, Sumiya Yates qualified for the state meet with her sixth-place finish in the shot put.

The State Competition will be held on Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5 in Richmond.
