SLHS Girls Track Wins Liberty District

Seahawk boys finish second in meet held at South Lakes.

Sophomores Maya Rodriguez and Delaney Wickman each won three events to lead the South Lakes High School girls track team to the Liberty District Outdoor Track and Field Championship Wednesday at SLHS.

The boys team finished second to Stone Bridge with strong performances in the distance events, highlighted by the district record setting 4x800 team of Senior Michael McHugh and juniors Luis Rivas, Michael Uhrig and Michael Kerr.

Rodriguez won both the 100-meter hurdles (15.75), 300-meter hurdles (47.05) and was the anchor leg on the winning 4x400. She teamed with fellow sophomores Claire Nieusma, Sydney Crutcher and junior Grace Gillen for a regional qualifying time of 4:06.30. Rodriguez was also 12th in the long jump (13-10.50).

Wickman was victorious in the 100 meters (12.634), 200 meters (25.51, meet record) and 400 meters (57.77).

The girls dominated the relays. Along with winning the 4x400, the 4x100 team of junior Kristian Tran, sophomores Comfort Reed, Ozioma Chinaka and Jordan Lozama won the event in 50.52. Freshman Golden Kumi-Darfour, junior Abby Reinhold, sophomore Augusta Durham and Gillen won the 4x800 relay in a state-qualifying time of 9:31.45.

Several girls won or placed in individual events to contribute to the team victory:

**Durham won the 800 meters (2:24.15) for the second consecutive year and finished fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:25.22)

**Kumi-Darfour was second in the 400 meters (59.83) and 800 meters (2:24.29).

**Lozama was fifth in the 100 meters (13.13), fourth in the 200 meters (26.66) and 10th in the shot (25-05.00).

**Chinaka was sixth in the 200 meters (27.56)

**Freshman Monica Lannen was second in the 1,600 meters (5:16.28) and fifth in the 3,200 (12:11.42).

**Sophomore Kristin Tran finished second in the long jump (16-01.50) and seventh in the triple jump (32-06.50).

**Sophomore Devin Nieusma finished fifth in the 1,600 meters (5:26.43) and fourth in the 3,200 (12:07.28).

**Sophomore Claire Nieusma was second in the 300 hurdles (47.98).

Also of note: Crutcher ran a 1:02.96 for ninth in the 400 meters, Reinhold finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:26.91), freshman Katie Martin was 10th in the 3,200 meters (12:44.20), Reed was 13th in the triple jump (31-01.50) and sophomores Gabrielle Lozama (15th, 63-04) and Melissa Hadley (17th, 58-08) in the discus.

On the boy’s side, McHugh (1:57.13) and Rivas (1:57.71) finished first and second, respectively, in the 800 meters. Kerr (2:00.53) was seventh that event.

The 4x400 meter team of junior Daniel Johnsen, Kerr, Rivas and McHugh finished second (3:25.16).

Senior Ashkan Mohammadi finished second in the 3,200 meters (9:48.93) and third in the 1,600 meters (4:22.90). Sophomore Andrew McCool was 6th in the 1,600 meters (4:36.08) and ran a 10:30.00 for 14th in the 3,200 meters. Juniors Stephen Galanti and Uhrig made strong showings in the distance events with Galanti running a 4:48.78 for 14th in the 1,600 and Uhrig turning in a 10:34.21 in the 3,200 meters for 17th.

In the sprints events, senior Elias Ingea finished third in the 100 meters (11.535) and fifth in the 200 meters (23.56). Junior Aeron Thai ran an 11.83 for fifth in the 100 meters. Johnsen was fourth in the 200 meters (23.35) and fifth in the 400 meters (51.71). Senior Alex Knutson ran a 52.95 in the 400 for eighth place.

Senior Raj Pilaka ran a 16.19 in the 110 hurdles for fourth. Freshman Charlie Guan ran a 17.53 in the event to finish 11th and a 44.87 for 13th place in the 300 meter hurdles.

Freshmen Skander Ballard and Alex Rudison competed in the jumps with Ballard finishing 10th (18-09.25) in the long jump and Rudison, 20th in the long jump (17-02.50) and 11th in the triple jump (38-04.50). Sophomore Kristian Gendron was 21st in the long jump (17-02.00) while junior Jon Mangal finished 15th in the shot put (32-00.50) and 10th in the discus (100-07). Johnsen threw 95-02 for 13th in the discus and sophomore Jeremiah Norman finished tied for 17th at 90-03.


SLHS track will compete in the Northern Regional Championships May 23-24 at Robinson High School.
