Seahawks Advance 21 to State Track Meet

Girls 4x800 meter relay sets a new school record at Northern Regionals.

Twenty one track and field athletes are moving on to the Virginia AAA State Championships after a strong showing at the Northern Regional last weekend.

Highlights and state qualifiers from region championship included the boys and girls 4x800 meter relays. The girls team of Augusta Durham, Abby Reinhold, Devin Nieusma, and Kyannah Calhoun set a new school record of 9:26. The boys team consisted of Ashkan Mohammadi, Michael McHugh, Luis Rivas and Jacob Grundahl. 

The girls 4x100 meter relay of Naimah Coleman, Symone Damper, Jordan Lozama, and Danielle Hale finished second. The boys 4x400 meter relay of Ian Angara, Jacob Grundahl, Aren Durana, and Armando Drain also finished second.

Armando Drain and Claire Nieusma both advanced to states in the 300-meter hurdles. Also qualifying for States are Ashkan Mohammadi in the 1600-meter run, Kyannah Calhoun in the 800-meter run, Corey Gilmore in the triple jump, and Sumiya Yates in the shot put and discus throw. 

Devin Nieusma and Danielle Hale had previously qualified for states in the 3200-meter run and the long jump respectively.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
