Reston National Beats Poquoson For Little League Final Berth

Continues run at state tourney with 13-9 win.

Reston National, the first Reston Little League team in 13 years to make it to the state tournament, is one game away from being state champions.

Reston defeated Poquoson 13-9 Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Virginia Little League State Tournament at Freedom Field in Leesburg.

The victory puts Reston National (District 4), a team of 11- and 12-year-old all-stars, in the tournament final at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Freedom Field. They will play SYA East (Division 10, from Centreville and Clifton), which beat West Springfield (Division 9) 10-4 on Tuesday.

Boosted by three two-run homers in the first three innings - Brendan Grammes in the first, Patrick Francisco in in the second and Antonio Menendez in the third - Reston took the lead early.

Reston was leading 6-2 in the third, when Poquoson, capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch, scored two runs. Reston opened up its lead in the fourth. Francisco, who reached base on a triple, scored when Sam Kidd tripled. Kidd was hit home on a single to make it 8-4.

Poquoson had runners at second and third and two outs in the bottom of the fourth when Trey Hicks hit a single, scoring John Mastogiankis.

Reston broke open its lead in the fifth with four runs. After Zander Bohnslav scored, Francisco hit a single. Francisco advanced to second, and then third, on wild pitches before scoring on Sam Kidd's single to make open the lead up to 10-5. Johnny Micka scored Kidd on a triple, then Micka scored on a wild pitch.

Reston added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Poquoson followed with two home runs in the bottom of the sixth.

If Reston wins Wednesday night, it earns a spot in the Southeastern Championship Tournament in Warner Robins, GA.
