Registration Now Open for Inaugural Reston Relay Triathlon, Coming Up June 22

No need to do all three races yourself: Buddy up with family, friends or co-workers.

Are you one of those people who has always been interested in trying a triathlon, but it just seemed to daunting? Now's your chance to "tri" it out!

Registration is now open for the very first Reston Relay Triathlon.

The brand-new, team-based race will take place on Sunday, June 22, beginning at 7 a.m.

The Reston Relay Triathlon (RRT) operates under the Reston Relay Triathlon Board and is a USA Triathlon (USAT) certified race. What makes this triathlon different? It introduces athletes to the sport of triathlon, without the daunting task of having to be proficient in each of the three disciplines, organizers explain. It is also to encourage families, friends and co-workers to participate in an event that promotes a healthy lifestyle and camaraderie.

The swimming portion of the race will be 400 meters; the biking portion will be 11.2 miles and the running portion will be 3.1 miles, according to the registration page. (See attached race maps.)

The race will be a sprint distance triathlon, with the first team member swimming 400 meters in the 50-meter Lake Newport Pool. Upon exiting the pool the swimmer will go to transition to pass off the timing chip to the biking team member, who will ride three loops of a 3.5-mile course and return to the same transition area in the pool parking lot.

Upon return, the biker will hand off the chip to the runner who will then run 5 kilometers on asphalt walkways through neighborhoods and beautiful parkland, returning to the finish to the cheering of their teammates and many others.
