Registration Open for 31st Reston Triathlon

Registration is open for the 31st annual Reston Triathlon, which will be Sunday, Sept. 7.

Swimmers, cyclists and runners looking for common ground can find it for the 31st year Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014. Registration is now open for the Reston Triathlon.

The U.S. Triathlon event will take participants on a one-mile swim on Lake Audubon, a 22.5-mile bike ride on the roads and a 6.2-mile (10 kilometer) run along Reston's trails before concluding at South Lakes High School.

The first race, held in 1984, was the result of local triathletes who came together to train for an event in Oxford, Md.  It had 165 participants.

Over the years, it has seen a wedding and a proposal. One triathlete,17-year-old Curtis Silvey, drowned in Lake Audubon during the 1988 event

Though the race is open to all, it's a good bet that Rick Uhrig and Neil Medoff will be among the participants. The two men have swam, biked and run in every single race.

Medoff has even used the same bicycle each year.

A local group, the Reston Area Triathletes, RATS for short, provides opportunities to train together, and can be found online here.
