No Reston Town Center Grand Prix in 2014?

Bike group says Town Center management has opted out of holding the annual race there.

The Reston Town Center Grand Prix, a popular bike race that has taken place the last 12 years, will not happen in 2014.

The cycling site Rouleurville reports that Boston Properties, owner of the property, told Evolution Cycling Club, which operates the annual event, that  ongoing construction and new residential and retail openings coming up made the race unworkable for the future.

Rouleurville says up to 500 top racers participated each year, bringing more than 1,000 visitors to Town Center.

One local racer says the race was a good one and taking it away will be a loss.

"You don’t lose a local race and not have it felt somewhat by the local cycling community,” Devon Halley of Gripped Racing, told Rouleurville.

“Reston provided a more technical and challenging race than most of your standard office park, four-corner crits, and that was a good thing.  Reston was an easy sell with plenty of options for food and things to do between races.”

The 2013 Reston Town Center Grand Prix took place on June 23. The race also raises money for various charities.
