High Jumper Jones Finishes Second at States
South Lakes' Rashaan Jones' jump of 6-foor-9 was one inch behind top finisher.
South Lakes junior Rashaan Jones jumped 6-foot-9 to finish second in the Virginia High School League AAA Indoor Track Championships in Hampton, VA on Saturday.
Jones, who had jumped 6-10 and nation-leading 7-0 earlier in the season, finished behind senior Nick Simmons of J.R. Tucker High. Tucker jumped 6-10 in the finals. The state indoor record, set in 2002, is 7-0.
Jones was this year's Liberty District and Northern Region High Jump champion.

Danielle Hale placed fourth in the girls long jump with a personal best 18-5.5. The boys 4 x 400 meter relay team of Ian Angara, Corey Gilmore, Jacob Grundahl, and Armando Drain also earned All-State honors with a fifth-place finish (3:27).
The boys 4 x 200 meter relay placed 11th. The team was comprised of Zac Parker, Brian Brinson, Aeron Thai, and Connor Metcalf. Kyannah Calhoun ran a personal best 1:17.91 in the 500 meter dash. Corey Gilmore triple jumped a season best 44-4. Aya Abdelhalim finished 13th in the 55 meter hurdles, missing the finals by .001 of a second and running her second-fastest time ever.

As a team, the boys track team finished tied for 16th. The South Lakes girls team tied for 32nd. Twenty-two Seahawks competed in Hampton. To see complete results, click here.
