Fairfax Remains Unbeaten, South Lakes Remains Winless

Rebels 4-0 for first time since 1999; Seahawks still seeking first win under Marvin Wooten.

In what was a tightly competitive game for almost three quarters, the Fairfax Rebels scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to beat the South Lakes Seahawks, 35-7, and remain at the top of the Liberty District standings.

Fairfax opened the scoring on their first offensive play from scrimmage with a 61-yard pass from Austin Perryman to Kyle Deivert, but could not score the rest of the first half. South Lakes forced a fumble inside their own five-yard line to stop a Rebels drive late in the first quarter and went to halftime down only 7-0.

In third quarter action, the Seahawks appeared to find some offensive rhythm before a controversial fumble by Ray Terry gave Fairfax an opportunity to extend their lead. Another big play, this time a 58-yard pass from Perryman to Abhishek Luthra, set up Mitch Ardinger for a 3-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 Rebels lead.

South Lakes answered with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Calvin Vaughn to Rashaan Jones on their next possession to cut the lead to 14-7 with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

Fairfax's Anthony Bowen returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to make the score 21-7, and then the Rebels turned two Seahawks turnovers, an interception and a fumbled kickoff, into two more touchdown runs from Bowen and Phil Dyer to seal the victory.

The game was moved from South Lakes' grass field to Fairfax's turf field earlier Friday in anticipation of heavy rainfall, however all precipitation stopped at Harold Stalnaker Stadium an hour before kickoff.

Fairfax (4-0, 2-0) looks to keep the streak going next Friday as its hosts Westfield in a non-district game. South Lakes (0-4, 0-2) will take a 100-mile drive down south to Mineral, VA for a game against Louisa County, a Division 4 team with a 3-1 record.
