Daye's Threes Lead South Lakes to Victory

Seahawks beat Woodbridge at holiday tournament.

Joe Daye was involved in his own 3-point contest in South Lakes' 60-52 win over Woodbridge at the Glory Days Grill Tournament of Champions on Tuesday. The senior shooting guard made seven 3-pointers en route to a season-high 23 point performance to lift the Seahawks over the Vikings.

South Lakes Head coach Andrew Duggan was excited that his senior shooter may have recaptured his touch when he heard Daye made seven 3-pointers.

"We've been looking for that all season and he let it come to him and get in the flow," Duggan said.

In six previous games, Daye, who was a first-team all Liberty District player last season, has only averaged 7.5 points and made on nine 3-pointers. Daye's 14-point fourth-quarter performance was more than what he accumulated in his last three games.

Not to be outdone by Daye, Woodbridge's Yapheth Emiru scored 15 points all off of five 3-pointers. Senior point guard Gabe Obenwa also bailed out the Vikings on numerous possessions by scoring 14 points.

South Lakes started the game on a 10-1 run, which was led by D.J. Christian who had six first quarter points. Woodbridge would come back on a run of its own to cut the Seahawks' led to 12-11. Woodbridge's Lamar Boykin made a steal to start a fast break layup to tie the game at 23, before South Lakes took a 28-23 advantage into halftime.

The Seahawks entered the fourth quarter with a 38-36 lead before Daye made four fourth quarter 3-pointers. His first 3-pointer in the final quarter was launched from 25 feet away to give the Seahawks a 43-38 lead. South Lakes would widen that lead to 48-38 before Woodbridge made a furious last ditch comeback off a Emiru's 3-pointer, followed up by a layup by Gabe Obenwa, to close within 54-52 with less than two minutes remaining. The Seahawks iced the game by making six free throws.

Osbourn 73, Lake Braddock 50 – Osbourn Advances To Championship Over Host Lake Braddock

Osbourn knocked off tournament host Lake Braddock 73-50 to advance to the finals of the tournament. The Eagles only trailed once all game, when they were down 1-0, but they dominated from start to finish with the play of guards Jay Lane (21 points) and Corey Bradford (15 points).

Robinson 61, Madison 60 – Robinson's Hackett Hits Game-Winning Shot over Madison

Robinson sophomore point guard Nate Hackett made a desperation sweeping layup with no time left on the clock to give the Rams a 61-60 win over Madison in the consolation bracket.

Middleburg 82, Hylton 53 - Middleburg Dominates Hylton to Advance To Championship

In its second tournament game of the day, Middleburg demonstrated power in the paint and quickness on the perimeter to beat Hylton 82-53 and advance to the championship. Earlier in the day, the Dragons beat Washington Public Latin 75-31 in the Hoop Magic's Holiday Tournament.

Middleburg was led by guard Nik Brown (18 points), center Mo Alie-Cox (18 points) and guard Drew Henry (17 points). Throughout the game, Hylton had difficulty on the inside because of the presence of Alie-Cox who notched 9 blocked shots.

Middleburg Head Coach Gary Hall was impressed with the way his team distributes the ball.

"I'm very happy with how our team played," said Hall, who is in his third year at Middleburg before coaching nearly two decades at Herndon. "Everyone accepts their role and that's not always the case at most private schools."

Mr. 3-pointer:

South Lakes' Joe Daye's seven 3-pointers are the most in any game out of any player in the DC metro region. Marshall's Aaron Aggen has had six in two separate games this season. Coincidently against South Lakes on Dec. 21 and against Woodbridge on Dec. 3, the same team that Daye had seven against.

Let's Hope For A Slow Rush Hour:

Middleburg will play in two separate tournaments on Wednesday. They play in the Briar Woods Tournament against Handley at 2:45 p.m. and then will travel to Burke for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Osbourn. Middleburg was a replacement for Edison, who backed out of the Glory Days Grill Tournament of Champions. The Dragons also played in two games on Tuesday, picking up a game against Washington Public Latin. Middleburg's Head Coach Gary Hall said he will play starters in both tournaments because "The next game is always the most important."

High Scorers:

Through two games, Osbourn's Jay Lane leads all scorers with 44 points. Middleburg's Mo Alie-Cox is second with 37 points.

Championship March:

Middleburg and Osbourn, who play in the championship game on Wednesday, have both won by an average margin of 22.75 points in both of their games in the tournament.

Wednesday's Schedule:

2:15 p.m.  Seventh Place Game – Madison (1-7) vs. Woodbridge (2-7)

4:00 p.m. Fifth Place Game – South Lakes (4-4) vs. Robinson (8-2)
