Basketball: SLHS Boys Win, Girls Lose

Madison girls halt Seahawks' winning streak.

Boosted by Brandon Kamga's 26 points, the South Lakes Seahawks defeated Madison 63-51 Tuesday.

It was the fifth straight game in which the sophomore guard scored 20 points or more.

Madison was led by Phillip Davine with 23 and Patrick Murphy with 13.

South Lakes improves to 9-12 overall (6-7 Liberty District). Madison is now 7-13 (5-8 Liberty).

Next up: South Lakes' final regular-season game of 2013, 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Stone Bridge. Madison plays at Fairfax, 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Girls Basketball

Madison ended South Lakes' seven-game winning streak with a 45-42 victory over the Seahawks in Reston on Tuesday.

South Lakes was down by four points with 10 seconds to play when junior guard, Sasha Sprei nailed a three-pointer to cut it to one with 8.6 seconds remaining.

Madison was called for traveling and South Lakes had possession with 6 seconds remaining.  Gabby Schultz got the ball to Abigail Rendle underneath, just missed, then Princess Aghayere got the rebound inside, but missed on her shot.

Madison got the rebound, and made both free throws with 1.3 secs remaining to seal the victory.

"There's no quit in us," South Lakes coach Christy Winters Scott said. "We just came up short. That was a gutsy shot by Sprei." 

The No. 16 Seahawks were led by Rendle wtih 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Warhawks had three players in double figures: Mamie Henshaw and Megan LeDuc with 11 points each and Katie Kerrigan with 10 points.

South Lakes is now 18-3 (11-2 Liberty, first place). Madison is 14-7, 10-3 Liberty.
