Basketball: Seahawks Begin With a Win

South Lakes tops Centreville at home; Girls win at Tip Off Tournament

South Lakes boys basketball began the 2011-12 season with a victory over 68-50 victory over Centreville at the Readers Are Leaders Tip Off game at South Lakes on Thursday.

The Seahawks started off sluggishly and were behind 16-8 after the first quarter. They battled back to pull within two points, 30-28 at halftime due to their uptempo offense and swarming defense.

The Seahawks came out strong after halftime and quickly pulled ahead, scoring  20 points each in the third and fourth quarters while holding Centreville to 20 points for the second half.

 The Seahawks were led in scoring by Jordan "Texas" Francis with a career high 27 points and J.D. Wallace with 13 points.

The Seahawks will face the Oakton Cougars at 7:30 Friday night at South Lakes in the final game of the Readers are Leaders event.

Girls Basketball - The Sehawks earned their first victory of the season, beating Potomac Falls 62-20 in the opening game of the West Springfield Tip Off on Thursday.  The Seahawks forced 35 turnovers. Sasha Sprei and Gabrielle Schultz each finished with a game-high 12 points. 

On Tuesday, the girls team opened the season a 39-29 loss at Westfield on Tuesday. Senior guard Emily Lopynski led the team with eight points and two steals. 

South Lakes plays the second game of the Tip Off Classic on Friday against South County at West Springfield. Tip off is 5:30 p.m.
