Summer Honors For Selection of South Lakes Students

Seven South Lakes High School students have been accepted into the Virginia Department of Education's Governor's School Program.

The Governor's School is a month-long summer residential program that offers gifted high school students opportunities to expand on an area of academic or artistic interest. It is a highly selective program (the Marine Science Institute accepts only six students per year, for example), and students are selected based on academic record, testing, an application process and teacher recommendation.

South Lakes representatives:

* Adrienne Nims, alternate, foreign languages

* Misha Vessali, alternate, foreign languages

* Sarah Burns, Virginia Institute of Marine Science at Christopher Newport University

* Michael Cronk, humanities, Radford University

* Michelle Park, humanities, Radford University

* Molly Mason, visual performing arts, Radford University

Additionally, three South Lakes students will attend a one-week space engineering program at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA: Juniors Daniel Calem, Karen Cronk and Tam Nguyen.
