South Lakes Volleyball Players Dig Pink - and Beat Marshall
Seahawks host annual night to support breast cancer awareness and research.
The pink balloons at the entrance were just the beginning of a very pink volleyball game at on Tuesday.
The South Lakes High School volleyball teams showed their support for the Side-Out Foundation (a breast cancer research and awareness charity) at their annual “Dig Pink” games.
Wearing hand-decorated, hot pink T-shirts, the girls’ teams played Marshall High School, which also wore pink shirts.

“We made our T-shirts during ‘Lock-In’, a teambuilding sleepover in the gym at the beginning of the season,” said Christy Hoffman, senior varsity co-captain. “Raising money for breast cancer awareness is so important,”
Added co-captain Sarah Delaney: “Everyone made a poster to decorate the gym. We’re happy to see the spectators wearing pink.”

Before the varsity game, the crowd held a moment of silence for friends and family members lost to breast cancer. The teams also honored three-time breast cancer survivor Wendy Deker, grandmother of junior varsity player Emily Deker.
The varsity easily defeated Marshall 3-0 to improve to 14-6 overall. The junior varsity and freshman teams also won their matches.
“We are really working together as a team this year,” said Delaney.
The next home volleyball game will be on Monday, Oct. 17 against Fairfax High starting at 5 p.m.
