SLHS Boys Track Wins Ed Bowie Invitational

Girls take second place among 47-team field.

South Lakes High School's boys track and field team won the 47-team Ed Bowie Invitational on Saturday at the Prince George's Sportsplex. 

Michael McHugh and Ashkan Mohmmadi placed first and third in the 1600- meter run, respectively.  Rashaan Jones placed second in the long jump and was on the second-place 4 x 200 meter relay (along with Zac Parker, Makis Greaux, and Aeron Thai).

In addition to being on the relay, Parker also placed thurd in the 300- meter dash with a personal best 36.91.  Mohammadi placed third in the 800- meter run, as did  the boys 4 x 400 meter relay of Michael Kerr, Michael McHugh, Jorge Noboa, and Daniel Johnsen.

Khoa Nguyen was fifth in the triple jump. Daniel Johnsen placed eighth in the 500-meter dash.

The SLHS girls track and field team placed second out of 47 schools at the meet.

Abigail Reinhold won the 800-meter run.  She was also part of the second-place 4 x 800 meter relay (along with Grace Gillen, Claire Nieusma, and Erin Bidwell). 

Augusta Durham and Devin Nieusma placed second and third in the 1,600-meter run, respectively.  Also on the track, Monica Lannen placed third in the 3,200-meter run, and Aya Abdelhalim placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles.

In the field events, Ozioma Chinaka placed second in the pole vault and Comfort Reed placed in the triple jump.

In other sports news: 

Basketball - South Lakes' girls basketball team won its its third straight Liberty District game when when it defeated Langley 43-44 at home Saturday. Senior G/F Mary Severin led South Lakes with a game-high 13 points, (6/8fg), 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. 

Senior G/F  Gabrielle Schultz finished with 10 points, (4/6fg), 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 assist.  Junior Guard Sasha Sprei came up with big plays for the Seahawks and added nine points, (4/7fg). She also finished with 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. 

Next up for South Lakes (6-1 overall, 3-1 Liberty District), is a 5:45 p.m. double header Tuesday vs Herndon at home.

SLHS will be raffling off an iPad Mini during the third quarter of the boys game, which will follow the girls. The team will also be collecting non perishables to donate to charity, so please bring contribute a couple of cans or boxes.

The boys team (2-4 overall 1-2 Liberty) lost to Langley 49-33 on Friday.

Swimming - Both of South Lakes teams earned their first victories on Saturday. The boys defeated Stone Bridge 180-106, and the girls defeated Stone Bridge 200-86.

On Friday, both teams lost to Jefferson (boys, 187-127; girls, 26-96).
