It's Prom Night

South Lakes juniors and seniors celebrate with "Midnight Masquerade" dance.

Quick quiz: who did you take to your prom? And what did you wear?

Even if your high school years are fading from memory, you always remember your prom (or that you did not go).

So Friday night is a big night for South Lakes High School juniors and seniors, who are holding their prom at Waterford at Fair Oaks.  The theme is "Midnight Masquerade."

South Lakes principal Bruce Butler says he knows the students are looking forward to the event.

"It is sort of like The Oscars for them," he said. "The red carpet is out and everyone is there. It's a really nice night. We are glad to participate and to provide kids with this opportunity."

The school also takes precautions to ensure prom night is a safe night for students. Students who attend as a date from another school must have a formed filled out by their school that says they are a student in good standing there, says Butler (and likewise for South Lakes students attending other proms).

There has also been increased alcohol awareness education as prom season approaches.

"We stress that drinking is not acceptable," says Butler. "We hope students will make good decisions."

Earlier this week, the seniors had an assembly sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The school's Students Against Destructive Decisions also gave out key chains this week encouraging students to be smart and drive safely, Butler said.
