FCPS Schools Will Open as Usual Wednesday

School is in and Halloween is on in Fairfax County.

All Fairfax County public schools and offices will open on time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, the schools system announced Tuesday.

Individual schools that may have power outages will be reassessed in the morning, so check your inbox for Keep in Touch messages from your individual schools or check the FCPS website.

FCPS is asking parents to be patient as buses may need to work around road closures in some parts of the county and bus routes may be delayed.

Meanwhile, Halloween trick or treating is generally on in most neighborhoods in Fairfax County. Since trick or treat is not organized by any one jurisdiction, like a town government it is hard to make a universal decision, said Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald.

For more information, and also check with your homeowners' association or town government (in places such as Vienna and Herndon).

Don't feel like participating? Turn your front lights off for some Halloween peace and quiet.

I am glad FCPS took the step of notifying us that school WILL open on schedule. They often omit these announcements, hoping we will assume that no news is good news. Now, we don't have to wonder!

Very smart calling school when they did. Sometimes they wait to see what other counties are doing. Better to be a little inconvenienced with our kids staying at home than to take a chance hurting even one of them.

The most they should have done was to close early on Monday and open late on Tuesday, the Lilly Livered Wimps.

I actually agree with the idea of closing early on Monday - all the elementary schools would have dismissed early anyway, and it was clear that at that point the weather would still be okay. We've actually been to school on many, many days that were much worse, and FCPS couldn't understand why anyone was 'upset about safety' then!
But staying closed on Tuesday was the right call. Our end of the county wasn't so hard hit but huge swaths of the southern and eastern side had major road closures, power lines down, and other situations that would have made Tuesday far more dangerous than it was worth. Given the predictions of major power outages, and FCPS' decision to terminate the hotline and rely exclusively on broadcast and internet announcements - which you have to have power to receive ----- they really couldn't have done anything else but to announce it early like they did.

It does not matter who is bringing this item to the forefront: rules should not be adjusted everyRead More time it is convenient. I seem to remember someone who just had to resign because they no longer lived in Reston. Not having been privy to all the politics in town, any adult with a functioning brain should have known or been told by their expert real estate agent, that the property being purchased was not within Reston boundaries and thereby disqualifying them from office within the established rules.

Molly-you have hit it on the head! We shouldn't be starting down this slippery slope of ruleRead More changing for 1 person.I do not know this individual , but that is not the issue here.

If the RA Board approves this self serving move by another RA Board member then the board membersRead More who do so should be voted out of their roles the next time they run for election.
