Before Reston: Colonial and Civil War History

Join the Reston Historic Trust for a free program,   “Before Reston: Colonial and Early History of the Reston Area.”

Award-winning local historian Karen Washburn and Assistant Professor Ted McCord of George Mason University will present the program that includes a discussion of King Charles II and the Northern Neck proprietary grants, how they limited settlement in comparison with the rest of Colonial Virginia, and how the land transferred from the Culpeper family to the Fairfax family.

Learn about the creation of Fairfax County and the critical role of Thomas, the 6th Lord Fairfax, had in keeping the land intact. The creation of Great Falls Manor, the land purchased by Benjamin Thornton, and the building of Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire railroad (now the W&OD), along with the Thornton station will be discussed, as well as what happened to the Thornton property after the Civil War.
