Dogwood Summer Science Academy Wraps up With Share Fair

Students learned about wildlife, ponds in two-week program.

Rising third grader Riley van Hilst excitedly described finding a box turtle on the field trip as part of Dogwood Elementary School's Summer Science Academy.

"I also liked making the mural," Riley said. "I learned that fish need nitrates to grow. If there is too little, they die; If there is too much, there is plant overgrowth."

Learning about wildlife and studying ponds were some of the highlights of the two-week program at Dogwood. The free program, part of Dogwood's wrapped up yesterday with a Share Fair for students to present their projects to parents and friends.

"I could not believe how much we accomplished in such a short amount of time," said Linda Martin, Dogwood's advanced academics resource teacher. "The kids came here every day ready to learn. I wish we could do this every single day."

A group of students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology served as volunteer counselors/mentors for the program.
