Dale Among Group Urging State for Earlier SOLs

A shift in schedule would give more time for teaching unrelated to the test, says FCPS superintendent.

Fairfax County Schools Superintendent Jack Dale and administrators from several other Virginia school systems are urging state education officials to change standardized tests from the end of the year to first semester.

Virginia has had Standards of Learning tests since 1998. The Federal No Child Left Behind mandate, passed in 2002, increased pressure on students meeting SOL benchmarks.

Dale's group says offering  standardized tests earlier in the school year would reduce the impact of testing and free teachers to offer more meaningful lessons.

Virginia Board of Education members are not sold on the idea, saying many students would not be prepared for the tests.
