Fairfax County School and Facility Closure Information for Monday, Dec. 9

Information on schools and activities, as well as other Fairfax County functions.

Fairfax County Public Schools announced this evening that schools are closed Monday, Dec. 9. 

From the press release:

On Monday, Dec. 9, all Fairfax County public schools will be closed, and administrative offices will open at noon. The following activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:

  • extracurricular activities
  • interscholastic contests
  • team practices
  • field trips
  • middle school after-school programs
  • professional learning and training courses
  • all adult and community education classes
  • recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS
  • School Age Child Care (SACC) centers.
Fairfax County Government offices will be open tomorrow, Monday, Dec. 9, however employees have been granted unscheduled leave. Emergency service personnel should report as scheduled.  

The Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will make a decision on operating status early Monday morning.  

Because the schools are closed Monday, Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) events, scheduled classes and Drop-in Group Fitness classes held at RECenters or other FCPA facilities are canceled.

FCPA winter camps held at RECenters or FCPA facilities are canceled, and Parks classes held at school locations, senior centers or community centers are canceled. Preschool programs at Lee District and Spring Hill will not operate.

However, Park Authority facilities will remain open.

According to the National Weather Service, Monday's forecast is for "rain or freezing rain before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain. High near 39. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. . New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible."

For Monday night, a "a slight chance of rain before 3 a.m., then a slight chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent."
