Area Team Takes Second at State LEGO Tourney

"Scionic Smarties" earn Champions Award.

The Scionic Smarties, a group of five students from Reston, Vienna and Great Falls, took the second-place Champions Award at the  Division 1 First Lego League (FLL) VA-DC Tournament.

The tournament was held at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on Dec. 3, and the Scionic Smarties were one of several local teams participating.

More than 100 teams from Virginia qualified for the state tournament.

This year's theme was Food Factor, and participants undertook projects to aid in food safety. This team's research project was based on identifying food safety issues with corn and finding innovative solutions for corn storage to prevent spoilage in developing countries.

 The competition spanned two days, and the teams were judged in areas such as Robot Design, Core Values and Research.

Teams use NXT Mindstorms and Legos to create innovative robots and attachments to achieve the tasks.  

Team members are: Aaraj Vij,  Anvitha Metpally and Siona Prasad of Colvin Run Elementary, Vishnu Murthy of Hunters Woods Elementary and Alex Tisseront of Forest Edge Elementary.
