Supervisors Will Talk About Crescent Plan Tuesday

Vote will get the ball rolling on new plan for 16 acres near Lake Anne.

The first steps toward redeveloping Reston's Crescent Apartments get underway on Tuesday as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote on a public hearing scheduled for July.

The supervisors are proposing a July 30 hearing on the interim development agreement.

Last week, the county announced it has selected Republic Land Development to redevelop the 181-unit apartments located near Lake Anne Plaza. Fairfax County purchased Crescent in 2006 to provide affordable housing in the area.

Republic's submission was chosen from among eight proposals in response to a Request for Proposals issued in February 2012. Development proposals for the site - which is now zoned for up to 935 units - were required to include 181 affordable housing units for the current residents.

However, some faith and community leaders, along with some Crescent residents, are concerned that the affordable units won’t be all that affordable.

In May, faith and community leaders urged developers to explicitly include the financing and design to ensure that current residents and other families earning between $30,000 and $50,000 a year are able to remain at Crescent after the development.

Some of the features of the interim development agreement:

* Include a relocation plan for Crescent residents.

* Realignment of Village Road and the relocation plan must be included in the first phase of development.

* Republic must include plans for "Land Unit A," which is the Lake Anne Plaza parking lot, the empty convenience store location and the Association of School Business Officials building.
