Spectrum, Terraset Before BOS on Tuesday

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors slated to discuss and decide on two major Reston projects.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will discuss and decide the future of two Reston projects at its meeting on Tuesday.

There will be a public hearing at 3:30 p.m. about redevelopment at The Spectrum shopping center.

A major redevelopment has been in the works for The Spectrum for years. The application, already recommended for approval by county planning and zoning, was recently reactivated.

The plan includes redevelopment of both Spectrum shopping centers, which reach from New Dominion Drive to Baron Cameron Avenue along Reston Parkway.

Land Bay A (where Best Buy and the soon-to-be closed Barnes & Noble are located) is planned for 546 dwelling units, 255 hotel rooms, 172,000 square feet of office, and 62,500 square feet of retail uses.

Land Bay B (along Fountain Drive) is planned for 643 dwelling units, 270 hotel rooms, and 48,650 square feet of retail uses.

Land Bay C (where Harris Teeter is located) is planned for 237 residential uses and 134,896 square feet or retail and bank uses (84,000 square feet of this retail is currently existing and will be retained.)

At 4:30 p.m., the board will decide on the future plans for Terraset Elementary School.

The plans, approved by the county planning commission, include proposed building additions totaling 33,184 square feet to include an administration addition, art/music addition, two classroom additions and a multi-purpose addition.

The upper parking area will be redesigned to improve traffic flow and to provide a kiss-and-ride drop-off area. The two existing pedestrian bridges will be demolished, and a new centrally located bridge will be constructed to connect the school with the kiss-and-ride area.

The expanded Terraset, built in 1977, will increase the capacity of the school from about 600 students to more than 800.
