Santorum Stops in Reston ... For Pizza

GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum visited Mamma Lucia's with staffers on Monday.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum stopped in Reston on Monday. It was not an official campaign appearance, so there was no media, no crowd and no speeches as he slipped into North Point's restaurant for a meeting with his staffers over pizza.

"We have a house in Great Falls, so we thought we would have a little campaign meeting here," Santorum said as he departed the restaurant with leftovers. "I like the barbecue chicken pizza."

Santorum is coming off Saturday's primary victory in Louisana on Saturday.

"It feels great," he said. "We're off to Wisconsin in the morning."

Mamma Lucia owner Greg Kahn said a Santorum staffer called the restaurant this afternoon to ask about the back room.

At about 2:30 p.m., U.S. Secret Service arrived to check out the entrances and exits, he said.

They set the back room up for about 30 people and pre-ordered 12 pizzas, Kahn said. Santorum, his staffers and a large contingent of Secret Service arrived at 6:40 p.m. and left about 8:30.

"I absolutely welcome any candidates," said Kahn, who pointed out he turned the TV in the bar from the usual sports and cooking channels to Fox News as a nod to the visitors. "I am an Independent—I have never voted for a winning candidate—but I will vote for whomever comes by."

They should have come on a Tuesday for the Buy One Get One for $2.99 special. Otherwise, Romney's capaign will continue to have a financial advantage over Santorum.

I think we can all agree on Mamma Lucia of Reston! Notice the "blue ribbon" in the photograph. It was awarded to the restaurant with the best food at the 2011 "Taste f Reston," Northern Virginia's largest outdoor food festival.

Wow, the owner truly is a brown-noser! I hope they turned that TV off of Fox News when they left, or else might tick off over half of the clientele!

He was going to DC to stand outside the Supreme Court to protest the federal healthh care law. So the SS brought him over here to get on the toll road and they needed a bite of food. Interestingly Santorum (family of saints) has always drawn a check from the government except while he has been working for a lobbying group the last few years after being defeated by 17 points on his re-election for US senator from Pa. Also, his mom and dad were life long employees of the federal government. And he got government payments for home schooling his kids here in Virginia while he was Senator from PA...over $100,000 they were paid out of PA tax funds.

Wait - Mama Lucia won best food at the Taste of Reston last year? Really...? I'm assuming it was just an 'overall best pizza' and not the 'overall best'...
Greg Kahn March 27, 2012 at 01:07 PM
It was the blue ribbon for best food. Meatball sliders are what brought home the blue ribbon.
Bethany Hannan March 27, 2012 at 01:19 PM
Ah, ok. We stopped trying their booth when the pizza we had was lukewarm a couple years back. Never tried the sliders...

Just shows how out of touch Santorum is. Santini's rules when it comes to Pizza in Reston.

Speaking of meatball sliders ...
Bethany Hannan March 27, 2012 at 02:14 PM
Haven't tried Santini's pizza... We're too addicted to Paisano's!

I feel about BBQ chicken pizza the way he feels about the separation of church and state. It makes me want to throw up.

Did he Pray over his BBQ Pizza?

The only thing I can say that's semi-positive regarding Santorum is I've almost ran him over with my car multiple times while I was his neighbor in GF.
John Nunyobiz March 27, 2012 at 06:57 PM
Now that would have really been a meatball slider
Stella McEnearny March 28, 2012 at 12:59 AM
LOL, Scott! He prayed over it prior to preying upon it, we can safely assume...

Wow I'm a Liberal?!?! thank you for enlightening me with your preconceived notions about people you are clueless about. BTW...I'm not a liberal or a democrat and I defiantly have my own criticisms about the President. I just do not care for this clown show that is being called a Republican Primary.

@Stacey Zammit - I am NO WAY a supporter of Obama, but I will definitely not hesitate at jumping at the chance to poke fun at Santorum! It's not always a partisan thing, ya know?
John Nunyobiz March 28, 2012 at 01:56 PM
WOW Stacy, you seems to be in a very critical mood today. Try some decaf and put the red pen away.
John Nunyobiz March 28, 2012 at 02:22 PM
Scott - We all have bad days. I catch myself in the same mood some days, and hopefully someone will try and gracefully point it out.
Scott March 28, 2012 at 02:28 PM
Tim - You are correct deleted my post got a little hot - soooo - Stacey, have you been snooping in my wallet and looking at my Voters Registration Card?
Scott March 28, 2012 at 02:29 PM
Oh I forgot - "WOW"!!!!!!! LOL! Have a good day one and all!
Richard Holmquist March 28, 2012 at 05:44 PM
Stacey, Perhaps you can give an example of the negative comments against Obama that were criticized. Except for one comment above, I read the messages as amusing irreverance rather than negative commentary. Americans have a long history of irreverence for leadership - especially toward those who present themselves as holier-than-thou. I know you often feel like the oppressed minority here in predominantly-liberal Reston, but wow, chill out.
Scott March 28, 2012 at 06:11 PM
Richard - Admittedly, we do not see eye to eye on all subjects; but alas you are a fun sparring partner here on the Patch. With regards to your post on this subject I have but two words -----Ready????-----SPOT ON! Have a great day Richard!
