Reston Association Offers Bus Suggestions

Board of Directors gives a 17-point plan to transportation officials seeking better bus service when Silver Line opens.

Reston Association president Ken Knueven has outlined the RA Board of Directors' suggestions for bus service that will benefit commuters and residents when Metro's Silver Line opens in December.

In a letter to Tom Biesiadny, Fairfax County Director of Transportation, Knueven says some of the keys to best serving Reston are to

  • Make available more convenient intra-Reston bus services to encourage Silver Line riders to leave their cars at home.
  • Put in place 10-minute transfer times at Reston Town Center to serve the Wiehle station.
  • Utilize the Circulator bus plans for the Sunrise Valley and Sunset Hills routes.
  • Put in place bus routes to facilitate use of the Herndon Monroe Park & Ride as a collector for the Silver Line.

Those are just four of the 17 points on RA's list for the department of transporation. The list involves changes and requests for RIBS within Reston, Fairfax Connector bus service and the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Fairfax Connector has recently been collecting public suggestions through meetings and through its website. Reston Citizens Association also recently authored a report on how bus service can most effectively serve Reston. Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins also asked the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for $2.2 million for better bus service in Reston.

Phase 1 of the Silver Line is set to open in December. Wiehle-Reston East, currently under construction, will be the end of the line for several years. That stop will also feature a 2,300-space parking garage, making for predictions of clogged Reston roads as motorists try to get to the station.
