RCC: Indoor Pool Fees To Rise On Sept. 1

Rise in cost necessary to keep up with aging facility, RCC officials say.

Reston Community Center says the fees for using the indoor pool will rise on Sept. 1.

This will be only the second time in RCC's 34-year history that prices for drop-in use have gone up, RCC Executive Director Leila Gordon says.

"As our facility at RCC Hunters Woods ages, we continue to look for approaches to upgrade it, modernize it, and assure it continues to offer patrons a high-quality experience," RCC said in an e-mail to patrons. "Accomplishing these efforts requires that we achieve greater cost-recovery than we have in the past. Our pricing will always factor in the subsidy that Reston patrons should and can expect as a consequence of the Small District 5 taxes they pay to support RCC.

"However, our fees will reflect a more sustainable approach to accommodating that subsidy requirement while also realizing an appropriate amount of revenue from those using our facilities, programs and services. Our changes were made in consultation with many patrons and the staff appreciates the close relationship we have with you."

Aging infrastructure at the RCC Hunters Woods indoor pool has been cited as one the reasons the Board of Governors has been looking into building a new pool at Baron Cameron Park.

That proposal, and the feasibility study by Brailsford & Dunlavey, has been met with mixed opinions by the community at a series of forums since February.

Gordon says the board will continue looking at options and will make a decision on whether to move forward with the pool proposal (including a community referendum) in 2014.

The aquatics center will be closed Aug. 19 to Sept. 15 for maintenance.
