Public Hearings On Deer Management Start This Week

Fairfax County is preparing for its 2011-2012 Deer Management Program, which will run from September 2011 to March 2012.

The county plans to use three population control methods, including archery, managed hunts and sharpshooting. The three methods are permitted by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  Sharpshooting and managed hunts will happen at selected parks within the county.

Fairfax County will hold public information meetings on the archery program in each district where chosen parks are located. The meetings begin Tuesday, Aug. 9. There will be a meeting in Reston Aug. 18.   See the complete list of meetings here.

Fairfax County’s Deer Management Programs recorded 815 deer killed last year, the most since the program started in January 1998. Sharpshooting at 15 parks yielded 226 deer, managed hunts at four parks yielded 137 deer, and the archery program, held at 11 parks, yielded 452 deer.
