Still Building at Dogwood Pool

Reston Association had hoped to have pool ready for short September season.

September has come and gone, and Reston Association's Dogwood Pool is still not ready for swimmers.

The pool is undergoing a $1.4 million renovation that was scheduled to be completed this summer, but it is way behind schedule.

"We had a very agressive schedule," said RA CEO Milton Matthews. "It didn't happen. The permit process took much longer than expected. We will have a spring grand opening and be ready for the next aquatic season."

The pool has not had swimmers in it since summer 2010. - moved the construction start from December 2011 to May 2012. At first, RA eyed a mid-summer opening, then it said in August there may be a September test-run season.

RA's outdoor swim season for the remaining pools ended Sunday. As of Monday, construction crews were still working on laying the pool deck.

The Dogwood Pool renovation project includes additional parking, a new bath house and 25-meter lap pool, as well as many other improvements. The project contractor is NVblu Inc.

The RA Board authorized the project in 2010.

Dogwood Pool is located at 2460 Green Range Dr., near the intersection of Glade Drive. The current facility went into service in 1979. It is a small, shallow pool with no modern features and the bath house is not ADA compliant. It is the only pool in short walking distance of a high-density neighborhood.

2 years with no pool for the Dogwood neighborhood is unacceptable. Blaming the "process" is a cop-out. People, RA employees & County employees, are responsible for this fiasco. They need to be named and held accountable.

And why is the new pool so small?! For 1.4 million dollars I expect a bit more room for swimming. I like the design of the zero entry, as having 5 young children this makes it easier for the young ones, but from the looks of it there is only room for my 5 kids and no more!

I so agree with Shelley, why is the da** pool so small for the high density here in this neighborhood we should have a larger pool and for the amount of money my option it's a waste of money! We have the most population of kids in one area than the rest of Reston. So why, can anyone tell us?

We were told by lifeguards at the end of the summer of ***2009*** that the pool would be closed in 2010 to rebuild. In 2010 it was open--nothing starting. In 2011 it was closed so people of the neighborhood--many who rely on public transportation--had to go elsewhere to swim. Then in 2012 it was still closed all year; neighborhood children continued to walk across Reston Pkwy to the next closest pool. My guess is that if this were a pool in a different neighborhood this kind of delay would not have happened.

Actually, according to the RA website, below is what the new Dogwood pool facility will entail. Size-wise, at 25 meters, it is on par with most of the other RA pools; while some its features are superior. Only Lake Newport pool is larger (50 meters vs. 25 meters). New Dogwood Facility: 25-meter lap pool with diving well and board. Zero depth entry with spray features and small fountain. Play pool with bench seating. Accessible spray & play water feature available April-October outside the pool fence, with consideration for a commissioned art-piece fountain through the Initiative for Public Art Reston (IPAR) process. Additional parking. Improved pathway for pedestrian circulation. A picnic pavilion with grills and an arbor with bench seating. New ADA accessible bath house with solar collectors. Exterior bathroom entrance for pavilion patrons. Underground cistern to collect water/gray water for irrigation. Future children’s tot lot. Large shade structures. Required and enhanced landscaping with native materials.
