Still Building at Dogwood Pool

Reston Association had hoped to have pool ready for short September season.

September has come and gone, and Reston Association's Dogwood Pool is still not ready for swimmers.

The pool is undergoing a $1.4 million renovation that was scheduled to be completed this summer, but it is way behind schedule.

"We had a very agressive schedule," said RA CEO Milton Matthews. "It didn't happen. The permit process took much longer than expected. We will have a spring grand opening and be ready for the next aquatic season."

The pool has not had swimmers in it since summer 2010. - moved the construction start from December 2011 to May 2012. At first, RA eyed a mid-summer opening, then it said in August there may be a September test-run season.

RA's outdoor swim season for the remaining pools ended Sunday. As of Monday, construction crews were still working on laying the pool deck.

The Dogwood Pool renovation project includes additional parking, a new bath house and 25-meter lap pool, as well as many other improvements. The project contractor is NVblu Inc.

The RA Board authorized the project in 2010.

Dogwood Pool is located at 2460 Green Range Dr., near the intersection of Glade Drive. The current facility went into service in 1979. It is a small, shallow pool with no modern features and the bath house is not ADA compliant. It is the only pool in short walking distance of a high-density neighborhood.
