No Fairway Vote For Supervisors Next Week

Hearing on redevelopment of Reston apartment complex postponed - again.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will not be making a decision on the redevelopment of Fairway Apartments next week.

The BOS , after the hearing was postponed from Sept. 27.

The new date for the public hearing is Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m.

The  plans for several five-story residential buildings and 131 townhouses on the site of the 40-year-old Fairway Apartments.

The Board of Supervisors vote is the next step in the redevelopment process, which has been under review for more than two years.

Even if approved, the issue will still have to go back to Design Review Board, which was ready to not approve the latest plan when JBG asked for a last-minute deferral at the June DRB meeting.

The saga of the Fairway redevelopment has been ongoing since 2009. Last summer, a staff report and the county planning commission told JBG, which initially wanted to build high-rises, to go back and try again.

The latest plan is smaller - 804 units rather than 951 in the neighborhood that now has 348 units in 18-three story buildings - and has some park space.

However, citizens, advocacy groups such as  and the DRB still find faults with it.

The DRB that there was not enough green space and that the "Texas Doughnut" style of architecture was not good design.

The DRB also said there should be an additional traffic study.
