Nice Start, But Keep Subtracting, Business Leaders Tell MWAA

Coalition supports LaHood's suggestions to chop $1 billion from Silver Line Phase 2 cost.

The Silver Line Phase 2 Coalition - on Tuesday sent a letter to MWAA urging support for U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's cost-saving ideas.

when he set a 30-day deadline to come up with a plan to reduce projected costs from $3.5 billion.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that a Federal Transit Administration official proposed transferring responsibility for the planned Route 28 rail station to Fairfax County to save an estimated $136 million.

Under the proposal, Fairfax and Loudoun counties would also take charge of building five commuter parking lots for a savings of $235 million.

The local leaders, including Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Mark Ingrao, said in Tuesday's letter they support that suggestion, and reiterated their proposed savings ideas.

Among them: An above-ground station at Dulles International Aiport; smaller rail yard; and the public-private garage projects.
