Hunter Mill Democrats Endorse Hynes For School Board Race

Forest Edge teacher to seek longtime member Gibson's spot.

The Hunter Mill Democrats on Thursday endorsed to run for the Fairfax County Public Schools school board seat in November.

"I am very excited," said Hynes, who lives in Reston. "In anticipation of this, I have planned my my campaign for this summer. I am going to knock on 6,000 doors in the Hunter Mill District."

Hynes, 51, is a former lawyer, founding member of the Vienna Teen Center Foundation and has held various civic and volunteer positions in Vienna and Fairfax County.

Hynes has said her top priorities would be narrowing the kindergarten readiness gap, attracting the best teachers and the most competitive salary and benefits for them, instituting new benchmarks other than standardized tests to gauge performance.

Stuart Gibson, who has held the Hunter Mill seat for 16 years, is not running for re-election. is running as a Republican for the Hunter Mill seat.

Driscoll McKee, a former educator and education association director who has also held numerous civic positions, says she will support Hynes.

"My goal has always been to give back," said Driscoll McKee. "I will still be involved."

The Hunter Mill endorsement is actually considered a recommendation until it is presented to the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) at its meeting May 24 at Falls Church High School. At that meeting, all endorsements and the six candidates running for three at-large seats will be voted on by the FCDC.
