Armed Preachers and Teachers: Good Idea?

A new Georgia gun law that goes into effect Tuesday opens the door for teachers and staff to carry guns on campus. 

School districts are empowered to build new policies arming teachers. Instead, they've flatly rejected the idea and are standing by bans on weapons, according to an Associated Press report.

School districts are relying on police officers and building security to keep the bad guys out, according to Mark Scott, superintendent of the Houston County School District. "The risk far outweighed the benefit," Scott told the AP.

The new law also makes it possible for guns in more businesses and churches, as well as public spaces like libraries.

Library director Alison Weissinger told NPR that patrons will be able to walk into libraries with guns out, and no questions asked. "You ... can't walk up to him and say, 'Mr. Patron, do you have a carry permit for that weapon?' You can't do that," she said.
