Reston Metro Work to Impact Traffic Two Days

Bridge building will affect motorists on Dulles Access and Toll roads Thursday and Friday.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project will begin overnight installation of the pedestrian bridge for the north side of the Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station over the next two weeks, beginning Friday night, Oct. 19.

The north bridge will cross over the westbound Airport Access Road,  the Dulles Toll Road, as well as the entrance ramp from Wiehle Avenue to the westbound DTR.

In order to minimize traffic impacts the bridge will be installed in three sections.

9:30 a.m. - The large bridge sections and escort vehicles will leave Dulles International Airport. As the trucks approach the Reston Parkway overpass (mile marker 5.2), the escort vehicles will position across the road and begin to slow traffic down to a "rolling stop."

This will allow one of the trucks to pull off the right hand side of the road and stage well onto the shoulder. The other truck will immediately back into the median using the left shoulder and lane.

Noon - After the first truck has been unloaded and cleared the area, the escort vehicles will institute  a second "rolling stop" to allow the second truck to cross the DIAAH from the right shoulder and back into the median using the left shoulder and lane.

The "rolling stops" will take approximately 10 minutes, after which traffic will be returned to normal.

Friday night, Oct. 19 to Saturday morning, Oct. 20 - 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

WESTBOUND ACCESS ROAD COMPLETELY CLOSED BETWEEN MM 8.6 AND 5.1

Detour:

  • Westbound access road traffic will be detoured onto westbound DTR via the Bus Slip Ramp near mile marker 8.6 (just west of Beulah Road)
  • Normal traffic pattern resumes beyond Reston Parkway (near mile marker 5.1)
  • Motorists heading to Dulles Airport will be able to return to the access road at the Airport Access Ramps located just beyond the Monroe Street overpass near mile marker 3.4, or at Route 28

Signage and barrels will be in place and police will be on site to direct traffic and ensure motorists safety.  Toll Road officials say to please drive with extreme caution near the work area.

The Pedestrian Bridges will provide access to and from the Wiehle-Reston East Station when the Silver Line begins operation in late 2013.
