Fairway Redevelopment To Go Before Supervisors on Sept. 27

Public hearing next step for citizens to speak on issue.

The Fairway Apartments redevelopment plan is scheduled to be presented to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.

The plans for several five-story residential buildings and 131 townhouses on the site of the 40-year-old Fairway Apartments.

The Board of Supervisors vote will be the next step in the process. The public is invited to speak before the BOS. To register to speak click here.

Even if approved, the issue will still have to go back to Reston Association's Design Review Board, which was ready to not approve the latest plan when JBG asked for a last-minute deferral at the June DRB meeting.

The saga of the Fairway redevelopment has been ongoing since 2009. Last summer, a staff report and the county planning commission told JBG, which initially wanted to build high-rises, to go back and try again.

The latest plan is smaller - 804 units rather than 951 in the neighborhood that now has 348 units in 18-three story buildings - and has some park space.

However, citizens, advocacy groups such as  and the DRB still find faults with it.

The DRB that there was not enough green space and that the "Texas Doughnut" style of architecture was not good design.

The DRB also said there should be an additional traffic study.
