Fairfax Planning Commission Postpones Fairway Decision Until July 28

County reviewing JBG's proposal for redevelopment of Reston apartments.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission, scheduled to make a decision Wednesday about a redevelopment plan for Reston's Fairway Apartments, deferred the decision until July 28.

Two weeks ago, the commission reviewed a staff report recommending approval. The group also heard from several Restonians who were opposed to developer JBG's plans for 804 units in several five-story buildings and 131 townhouses.

In June, JBG representatives showed their latest plan to Reston Association's Design Review Board. The DRB called the plans a "South Florida motel" design and was leaning toward not approving it when developers asked for a last-minute deferral.

Even if the county approves the plan - which has been modified considerably from a high-rise building with 951 units proposed two years ago - the developers still must go back to the DRB with their design.

Other criticism of the proposal: urban-type design, unsightly parking garages, high denisty that is not close enough to a future Metro stop, clogged roads, and 50-foot townhouse heights.
