County Offers List of Silver Line Names

"Wiehle-Reston East" and "Reston Town Center" make the cut after thousands give feedback to Metro.

Wiehle-Reston East and Reston Town Center.

Those are the names the Fairfax County Department of Transportation has suggested for Metrorail Silver Line stations that will stop here beginning in 2013.

The first phase of the 23 miles of rail that will run through Fairfax County and eventually into Loudoun County will be completed in late 2013, with the first Reston station (Wiehle-Reston East) serving as the end of the line until Phase 2 opens three years later.

Meanwhile, the Reston Parkway station may be named Reston Town Center, even though the station will be several blocks from Reston Town Center proper.

Metro says it received more than 16,000 responses from the public after calling for input recently. Officials suggested that station names should be relevant, brief and evocative.

FDOT staff recommends the following names, according to The Washington Post.

*Tysons East would be called McLean.

*Tysons Central 123 would be called Tysons Corner.

*Tysons Central 7 would be called Greensboro Park, an office park near Route 7, Route 123 and International and Westpark drives.

*Tysons West would be Spring Hill.

*Wiehle Avenue would be Wiehle-Reston East.

*Reston Parkway would be Reston Town Center.

*Herndon-Monroe would be Herndon.

*Route 28 would be Innovation, named after Innovation Road which is an existing road just north of the station.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to pass a resolution Tuesday with name recommendations. The final vote on the station names then goes to the Metro board of directors, and the Metro board is likely to decide later this spring.
