County Exec: Budget Gap May Affect Schools

2012 outlook just as tight as 2011, Griffin says.

Fairfax County Executive Anthony Griffin says members of the county Board of Supervisors and the School Board should not bank on an increase in funding that was pledged to be included in the 2012 budget.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Griffin says a $114.4 million budget gap in the coming fiscal year could hamper efforts to boost school funding. Griffin said — which accounts for about 53 percent of general fund expenses. The would result in $81 million more for FCPS, which expects more than 181,000 students next year.

But a sluggish economy and legislation that could mean the counties must absorb the cost of maintaining and repairing secondary roads means budget uncertainty.
